Marco Structure Case Study 700 words-typed

The different types of companies that make up the music industry are major and independent. Major labels are famous and more known and independent are less known because it is not global and has a niche target audience.

Sony Music Entertainment is a major record label that has many artists signed to them for example Alicia Keys, Alexandra Burke, Susan Boyle, Micheal Jackson, Lemar are all signed to Sony, the artists genre are R&B, Soul and Pop. A Independent label such as D Block and the artists that are in the label are Jadakiss, Styles P and Sheek Louch their genre is rap – hip hop which is less known. Each company has their own way of attracting their audience and Sony Music Entertainment has many young artists for instance, Alexandra Burke and Christina Aguilera are young artists which will appeal to mainly young female teenagers aged eight  and over to follow their trend and idolize them. D block only consists of 3 artists that all specialize in the genre rap therefore their target audience is limited to people that only listen to rap/Hip hop the target audience could be limited to black/white mainly males aged 17 - 23 and above because of the amount of swearing in their music/lyrics.

Sony Music Entertainment own other record labels, this is known as subsidiary such as Colombia records and Sony BMG. Both of the record labels use the same method to advertise their products by advertising online for example itunes and HMV, adverts on the television and also radio. Sony Music Entertainment have synergised with many companies for example the artist Giggs synergised with Playstation(which sony owned) advertising their product and also Colombia records. Sony own Playstation and Portable Playstation to appeal to a wider audience young adults and older adults. Sony uses Horizontal Intregration in their company for instance they make different products to expand their business.

Colombia records distribute their music by promoting their music to large music companies, make CD's to sell and mixtapes online, selling clothes with their face on it so the audience will recognize who they are and also magazines, newspaper.Sony Music Entertainment are becoming more known and it is the second largest record music company and have expanded even more by owning more record labels to make them more noticeable to the public.

The companies market promote their artists by making the artists website for example Alexandra Burke has a website and also has a social networking website called twitter which the fans can follow her and can listen to her latest music and what she has been lately up to i.e concert and latest album.Alexandra Burke which is a major label and Jadakiss is an Independent label have different techniques in selling their music for instance a independent label distribute their music by mixtapes, radio (could be illegal) and online but for Major labels have many ways to distribute their music, this is because major labels have more money to spend for advertising. As for Independent, have little to spend because their company is small and have a difficult time promoting themselves without the assistance of a Major Label.

Independent labels have less capital to work with than major record labels usually affecting production quality of albums. Independent labels are in need for more money for an artist before going with a more mainstream label and making loads of money, especially if it is a more underground type of music.Alexandra Burke has sold over 105,000 copies on its first day of release song called 'Hallelujah' and became a successful artist in Sony Music Entertainment. Major record label companies to a global audience because they have a lot of money and it is all over the world and Independent label is a niche company and attracts only one area because of its genre.
